I just finished this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember one lesson from this book, which I read 10 years ago, that a coffee shop will often pay $1.00, $1.10 and $1.20 for three sizes or qualities of coffee, but will charge the consumer $2.00, $3.00, and $4.00 respectively. I'm so glad that the public is taking a stronger interest in economic issues. You don’t need any prior economic knowledge to understand his key arguments and he explains things in clear and simple language. Magnificently written and read, this book solves some of the mysteries of everyday life with wit and style. A book which makes economics seems intuitive and simple. Like Ricardo whose models did not work outside of some very specific examples, this book goes on to repeat some of the same oversimplification and applying it to justify some very dubious practices and attitudes. I do enjoy Tim Harford's books and his radio show, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2017. While I don't personally like how the author chooses to accept altruism and the general notion of the "greater good" in his arguments, I absolutely love the economic side of all of his arguments.

Harford clearly knows the difference between uphill and down, and in ten delightful chapters, he explains it to his readers. It can when Harford takes the reins, using his trademark wit to explain why it costs an arm and a leg to buy a cappuccino and why it's nearly impossible to purchase a decent used car. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. While Freakonomics is probably responsible for the greatest quantity of introductions to economics, Tim Harford's The Undercover Economist is probably one of the highest-*quality* introductions there is. It is a pretty light read, but subtly changes the way you view the world. Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017. Having read and enjoyed it, I was curious to see whether its successor 'The Undercover Economist Strikes Back' (named after the Star Wars' 'The Empire Strikes Back') would live up to the illustrious first volume. The science behind this book is, in the end, a dumbed-down version of what you would learn in Economics 1 at any college or university.

The Undercover Economist is a clearly-written and thorough introduction to economics using practical examples such as coffee shops and grocery store pricing, auctions, congestion charges and health care systems. The first few chapters were interesting, as the author attempts to explain basic notions such as “the world of truth”, marginal value, free trade, game theory, and more. You might not want to put it down once you start. However I have one small gripe, in that he never provides any context when making the economic argument, he just makes the economic argument.
