Almost everything is for sale. Finding an outdoors activity is the perfect way to diversify the food and wine experiences, which – if you’re not careful – could easily fill an entire long weekend. That’s a lot of vineyards and cellar doors. They did not hesitate to refer us to other wineries if they were not open for lunch or dinner and there were definitely no signs of competition between any of the growers. Mudgee is located 268km northwest of Sydney, approximately 3 and a half hours drive and arguably the perfect distance for a short weekend road trip along the scenic Great Western Highway. If you like your rooms to feel straight from Jane Austen then look no further than Forgendenny Guest House. If you are a lover of wine and cheese Mudgee is definitely for you. A great way to visit Gulgong from Mudgee is to take the Henry Lawson Drive for 37.4 km to Gulgong and return by the B55/Castlereagh Highway 33 km.

The wine selection is interesting, with a mix of typical Australian flavours and European styles. We visited from a Sunday through to Wednesday. The old gold-mining town of Gulgong is a wonderful place to visit and it still has its 19th-century charm, with the main street lined by heritage buildings with original verandahs and iron-lace balconies.

The flight time is 45 minutes. Other areas worth visiting are Dunn’s Swamp, Munghorn Gap Reserve, and Goulburn River National Park. As well as the national parks, one of the other things you can do in the Mudgee region is a day trip (or half-day trip) to the historic towns nearby. One of the most popular styles is a strong stout called Mudgee Mud, although I think the pale ale and porter are also worth trying. Book a room at one of the boutique bed and breakfasts in the town center and … It is a toll road. Strolling through the streets, you’ll get a sense of the town’s heritage and there are quite a few interesting historic buildings. The Lawson Park Hotel at 1 Church Street Mudgee. While on route be sure to stop in at the small towns of Gulgong and Rylestone, where many of the historic store edifices from Australia’s pioneer days remain. The first course of the four-course meal is served around the fire-pit, so that diners can get to know head chef Pip Sumbak and learn about the local produce they’re eating and the primeval way it’s being prepared, before settling down around a communal table.
