There were too many characters to keep track off but thank goodness the book included a genealogy that I could refer too. One of the first books I ever read in college - was in an amazing course on 20th century female writers of color. It meanders along and you get to know the family intimately, while still feeling like you want more. Here's why I loved it: Maybe 3.5 stars. It was an interesting read and a nice break from the depressing short stories we had been reading in which characters were mostly isolated and plotlines tragic.

Rarely do high school students enjoy the books they are assigned to read by their English teachers. Although students can read it as a whole class, I feel students should read it independently. However, How the García Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez is definitely a novel that does not deserve to be left within the grime of your trash. Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018. The novel follows the lives of four sisters named Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofía who immigrate to the United States with their mother and father from the Dominican Republic. Told in reverse, it recounts the families’ move to America and flight from Dictator Trujillo. Early on I was engaged by the tale, but quickly became tired of bickering, undifferentiated characters. It was told in reverse chronological order, by a few different viewpoints, which got a bit confusing. It started off hokey and it was hard for me to imagine that young DR girls used such cliche and idiomatic American vernacular while trying to learn English, eg it was hard for me to believe the voice of the characters.
On the interesting side, I had to write a lot of notes on the characters and refer to Sparknotes for further clarification on certain subjects. All four girls live relatively different lives from each other, each struggling with the fact their parents are more old-fashioned with their parenting styles compared to this new way of life they are experiencing in the United States.
